Online Writing – Don’t Hide Behind A Weird Nickname

If you have dabbled in online writing for any length of time, you will have started to come across all the websites that cater for online writers.  They might have any number of ways they let you publish your work – from paying you for the number of views your articles get, to enabling you to sell your articles directly to any passing buyer.

But there is one thing that all these sites have in common.  They all ask for a log in name and password when you join.

Okay so what’s the big deal, I hear you asking.  Well it’s this.  Lots of people go by some nickname they are known as – either among their friends or just something they make up themselves.

But here’s the thing.  You are an online writer now.  You want you and your writing to be taken seriously.  And that isn’t going to happen as long as you have a daft nickname that you are hiding behind.

Let’s face it, if you have a writing blog or a website which enables you to sell yourself and your writing skills, you aren’t going to go under any nicknames there are you?  So why do it elsewhere?  You need a consistent, real name and persona that people can connect you with.  Make yourself recognisable everywhere you go, and you will soon start reaping the results.

Not only is a nickname unprofessional, it also means people won’t know that it’s you.  It could work if you want to try out a particular site to see if it works before putting your real name on that account.  But that is the only reason I can imagine why it would.  And of course, as soon as you know it does work, you will change that nickname to your real one, won’t you?
